What a surprise! The Easter Bunny hopped through the neighborhood checking out her GPS for the big day. That girl is always thinking ahead! And she reminded me that you should, too. That record-setting cold Maryland winter was tough on all of us, but it was also tough on your oil furnace, as well. Doesn’t it deserve some TLC, too! And when it comes to furnaces, the old saying holds true: an ounce of prevention truly is worth a pound of cure. So now’s a good time of year to share some basic maintenance tasks that you can do yourself to ensure that your furnace stays in peak condition.
As Genie always says, there is no substitute for a regular system tune-up performed by the experts, but there are a number of things that you can do to help keep your home heating oil system running smoothly and hold energy costs down. Just keep in mind that your home oil heating system is complex and does require professional maintenance and repair regularly. Other than the basic cleaning steps below, I don’t recommend you attempt to make other adjustments yourself.
Now, here are some things your favorite Genie does suggest that you do now to help maintain your heating oil system.
Clean or replace the filters on furnaces and heat pumps every month.
Even in the warm weather months?
Yes! Most of us just naturally tend to be fairly aware of the need to change filters during the winter, but I’ve noticed that you quickly forget about it, during the summer months. Since most of the air that you breathe in your home flows through the furnace filter, it is extremely important that this filter be changed, at the very least, every three months, and monthly if, you live in bottle, like I do!.
Your filter‘s job is to collect dust, pet dander, and pollen from the air before it makes its way to the combustion chamber. But if it’s not changed often enough, it can become clogged, making it more difficult for air to pass through. That dirty filter can cause fans to work harder, increasing energy costs and even damaging your equipment or cause it to fail altogether. Not only that, but those filters have an impact on your indoor air quality as well. Frequent filter changes will help to increase the lifespan of your entire system and improve the quality of the air you breathe, too.
So, yes, your furnace filter needs to be changed even in the warmer months. Don’t let dirty filters hinder the work of your system or harm your indoor air quality, regardless of the season.
Clean warm-air registers, hot water baseboard heaters and radiators as needed.
This is an easy one. Make sure they’re not blocked by furniture, carpeting or drapes. It may take a little effort to get to each one, but it will be worth it the long run. And don’t forget to clean the furnace room once in a while, too. Dirt and lint from areas surrounding the unit can be pulled into the burner along with combustion air. Eventually, they will slow the movement of combustion air to the unit, causing it to burn inefficiently, which will inevitably cost you more.
And also, be sure those boxes of holiday decorations and thrift store donations haven’t crept up on the on the furnace space. Oil-fired furnaces and boilers require an adequate supply of air to ensure proper burning of the fuel.
