How long will heating oil last? I get that question a lot! It’s a little tricky to answer, because the age and condition of your oil furnace, the size of your home, and outside temperatures will all affect how much heating oil you will use.
The chart below is based on an average Maryland home, and will help you estimate how long heating oil will last. Adjust your estimates accordingly, erring on the side of caution to prevent running out of heating oil.
Because our genies usually deliver in 3 days or sooner, we strongly suggest you keep your heating oil level above 30 gallons. And if your home is larger than average, or isn’t well insulated, you should probably aim for a delivery before you are below 50 gallons. We genies never want you to run out of heating oil or worry if your heating oil will last!

In a pinch, you can put kerosene or diesel fuel in your oil tank to keep your system running until your next heating oil delivery, and your system will run fine. Make sure to use a new can or one used only for the specific product you purchase.
